What 48V Phantom Power Does — and When to Leave It Off
Phantom power supplies some microphones through the cable. Understand the balanced connection, the exceptions, and the safe order for switching it.
The 48V button on an interface looks more dangerous than it usually is, which leads to two opposite mistakes: leaving it off when a condenser microphone needs it, or turning it on without checking what is connected.
Phantom power is DC voltage sent through a balanced microphone cable. It powers the electronics in many condenser microphones and some active accessories. It is not a volume boost, an EQ setting, or a universal improvement to the sound.
Why the microphone can use the same cable
In a normal balanced XLR connection, the phantom voltage is applied equally to the two signal conductors relative to the shield. A balanced dynamic microphone sees no voltage difference across its audio output, so the power does not operate it or change its signal in the same way it powers a condenser.
Shure’s phantom-power explanation describes the voltage and why balanced dynamic microphones are generally unaffected. “Generally” matters: the microphone’s design and the cable wiring still count.
The exceptions are the reason for the caution
Many modern balanced dynamic microphones can be connected to a phantom-powered input. Some ribbon microphones, older designs, and unbalanced devices may not be safe with phantom voltage applied. A receiver or other line-level output connected through the wrong adapter can also create noise or damage risk.
Focusrite’s input guidance is deliberately strict: use XLR inputs for microphones, do not apply 48V to line or instrument outputs, and check the microphone manufacturer’s instructions, especially with ribbons.
Use a quiet switching order
Before connecting a microphone or changing the signal path:
- Turn the channel gain down and lower the monitor or speaker level.
- Connect the microphone with phantom power off.
- Confirm that the microphone and cable are appropriate for phantom power.
- Turn on 48V if the microphone requires it.
- Bring the gain and listening level back up gradually.
When disconnecting, reverse the order. Turn phantom power off first and give the system a moment before pulling the cable. Shure also advises turning phantom off while plugging or unplugging to avoid pops that can reach speakers or headphones.
If a condenser microphone produces no signal, check phantom power along with the cable, input selection, and gain. If a device begins humming after you enable 48V, turn it off before troubleshooting anything else.
The useful rule is not “phantom power is dangerous” or “phantom power never hurts.” It is: send it only through a compatible balanced microphone path, and follow the device manual when the design is unfamiliar.
