Balanced or Unbalanced Audio Cables? The Cable Is Not the Whole Answer

Balanced connections reject more induced noise over longer runs. Unbalanced connections can be fine for short paths. Choose for the signal path, not the marketing.

“Balanced cable” is often used as a synonym for “good cable.” It is not.

Balanced and unbalanced connections solve different wiring problems. A balanced connection can reject noise picked up along the cable, especially over longer runs. An unbalanced connection uses fewer conductors and can work perfectly well when the run is short and the environment is quiet.

What balanced actually means

A balanced audio path carries the signal on two conductors with opposite polarity, along with a shield. Noise that enters both signal conductors can be canceled at the receiving input because the receiver compares the difference between them.

XLR connections are commonly balanced. A 1/4-inch TRS connector can also carry a balanced mono signal, even though the same connector can carry stereo headphones. A TS connector normally carries an unbalanced mono signal.

The connector shape does not tell you everything. The equipment at both ends has to support the balanced path for the noise rejection to happen.

Yamaha’s PA cable guide makes the practical distinction: balanced microphone connections are common in professional systems, while short unbalanced line-level connections may be fine in a quiet environment. It also points to a DI box when a longer instrument run needs a balanced signal.

When unbalanced is reasonable

A short guitar cable from an instrument to an amp is normally unbalanced by design. A short connection between nearby consumer devices may also work without audible trouble. There is no prize for converting every six-inch connection into a complicated signal path.

The risk grows with distance and environment. A long unbalanced run beside power cables, lighting equipment, or noisy digital devices has more opportunity to pick up hum or interference. The cable may not be defective; the connection may simply be carrying a format that is less resistant to the surroundings.

What a DI box changes

A DI box can convert an unbalanced, high-impedance instrument signal into a balanced, lower-impedance mic-level output. Radial’s explanation of a DI describes why that helps a guitar, bass, keyboard, or other instrument reach a mixer over a longer stage run.

That is different from buying a longer guitar cable and hoping for the best. The DI changes the signal path so the mixer can receive it as a balanced microphone-level source. It can also help with ground-loop hum, depending on the design and the problem.

The buying decision

Use balanced connections when the equipment supports them, the run is long, or the environment is electrically noisy. Use unbalanced connections when the equipment requires them or the short path is working cleanly.

If you hear hum, do not start with an expensive cable. Check the cable type, the inputs and outputs, nearby power wiring, gain structure, and whether a DI or isolation device belongs in the path. A premium version of the wrong connection is still the wrong connection.
