Audio Buffer Size: Lower for Recording, Higher for Mixing
Buffer size trades monitoring delay against computer workload. Use a small buffer for live input and a larger one when the session needs processing power.
Buffer-size settings look like a technical detail until a singer hears a delayed version of their own voice or a mix starts clicking during playback.
The setting is a timing tradeoff. A smaller buffer gives the computer less audio to collect before processing it, which usually reduces the delay between playing and hearing. A larger buffer gives the computer more time to process each block, which can make a dense session more stable.
Recording and mixing want different settings
When someone is performing through the computer, latency is part of the performance. A delayed vocal or guitar can make the performer push ahead of the beat or stop trusting the headphones. Start with a smaller buffer and raise it only when the computer cannot keep up.
During mixing, the performer is no longer waiting on each note in the same way. Plugins, virtual instruments, and many tracks may need more processing time. A larger buffer can reduce clicks, pops, and dropouts when the session is heavy.
Focusrite’s latency guide explains the buffer as the period the computer gets to process audio before it moves to or from the interface. The important part is the job: live input favors responsiveness, while playback favors stability.
Smaller is not automatically better
If the buffer is too small for the computer and session, the audio may crackle or stop. Lowering it again does not make the system more professional; it simply gives the processor less time.
If the buffer is too large while recording, the delay may become distracting. The answer is not always a faster computer. You can reduce plugin load, freeze or print software instruments, close other applications, use direct monitoring if the interface supports it, or raise the buffer after tracking.
Direct monitoring can remove the round trip through the DAW, but it also means the performer may not hear effects inserted on the track. Some interfaces and DAWs offer different monitoring paths, so check how yours routes the signal before assuming the knob has solved the problem.
Sample rate changes the timing too
Buffer size is measured in samples on many systems. The same number of samples represents less time at a higher sample rate, so sample rate and buffer size work together. Focusrite’s sample-rate and buffer guide lays out that relationship.
That does not mean raising the sample rate is a free latency fix. It can increase file sizes and processing demands, and the project still has to match the delivery requirements.
A simple workflow
Use a smaller buffer while recording a live part. If the computer starts failing, remove unnecessary processing before increasing the delay the performer has to tolerate. After the take is finished, raise the buffer if the mix needs more plugins or tracks.
There is no universally correct buffer number. There is only a setting that gives the current job enough responsiveness or enough processing room. Change it when the job changes.
